Not to Us

Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness. (Psalm 115:1)

This is a prayer similar to what Jesus taught us, “Hallowed be your name” (Matt. 6:9). This is the prayer of someone who is truly a child of God. He is not concerned anymore about getting a name for himself. Not concerned anymore in enhancing his reputation among other people. Not pursuing fame and glory. Not dreaming about popularity. Not trying to draw praises from men.

The chief concern becomes nothing but the glory of God. His prayer is about asking God to do the passion of God’s own heart – God glorifying God. If “the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever,” it implies as John Piper observed, “The chief end of God is to glorify God and enjoy Himself forever” (Desiring God, p. 31). This may sound “selfish” at first glance but God is God and he is absolutely worthy of admiration and awe.

The prayer for God to bring glory to his name is moved by the worth of God – “for your steadfast love and your faithfulness.” We are not the ones worthy of praise, he is.

May this be our prayer, “Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory.”

The cross before me the world behind
No turning back, raise the banner high
It’s not for me, it’s all for You

Let the heavens shake and split the sky
Let the people clap their hands and cry
It’s not for us, it’s all for You

Not to us, but to Your Name be the glory
Not to us, but to Your Name be the glory

Our hearts unfold before Your throne
The only place for those who know
It’s not for us, It’s all for You

Send Your holy fire on this offering
Let our worship burn for the world to see
It’s not for us, It’s all for You

The earth is shaking, the mountains shouting
It’s all for You
The waves are crashing, the sun is raging
It’s all for You
The universe spinning and singing
It’s all for You
The children dancing, dancing, dancing
It’s all for You, It’s all for You

My all for You
Not to us, but to Your Name be the glory
My all for You
Not to us, but to Your Name be the glory
My all for You
Not to us, but to Your Name be the glory (by Chris Tomlin)
